Uncovering the Truth

Casolaro Chronicles is a website dedicated to exploring conspiracy theories surrounding the death of Danny Casalaro.

Introduction

“If anything happens to me, don’t believe it was an accident;” those were some of the last words that Danny Casolaro said to his brother Anthony Casolaro weeks before his death (O’Harrow and Lee, 1). Joseph Daniel Casolaro was an American journalist who worked for Computer Age, a publication for the software and computer industry (1). He came to public attention in August of 1991 when he was found dead at the age of forty-four in his hotel room bathtub (Nissani, 65). Casolaro’s death was ultimately ruled a suicide, but many people to this day argue that he was murdered because he was investigating the dark secrets of the government and about to expose them through his research (65). Despite the official ruling of suicide, an analysis of the suspicious circumstances surrounding journalist Danny Casolaro's death—including his ominous warnings to family, contradictions in the police report, and autopsy irregularities—suggests he was murdered due to his investigative journalism into government secrets (Treitz). Was Danny murdered due to his investigative journalism into top secret government programs? Did he commit suicide in a hotel bathroom? Let’s take a look at the evidence to see what really happened to Danny Casolaro.

There are two main conspiracy theories regarding the death of Danny Casolaro. The first theory surrounding Casolaro’s death is he committed suicide due to the fact that he was having money troubles. The second and more interesting theory regarding the journalist’s death is that he was murdered due to his investigative research into top government secrets and that he was close to exposing the dark truth behind many government agencies. The first conspiracy theory regarding Danny Casolaro’s death is he committed suicide because he was having money troubles. State officials said that Casolaro’s death was “not consistent with suicide” (Staff, 1). Danny had “ten to twelve cuts on his wrists that were so deep in sections that it had cut through tendons” (O’Harrow and Lee, 1). Blood was also splattered on the bathtub walls (1). Paramedics on the scene argued that the cuts to the wrists were “so deep that they cut all the way through tendons” (1). If that is the case, it would be impossible to cut both wrists as they would be completely limp. The theory that Danny Casolaro committed suicide has been refuted by state officials and medical professionals that were on the scene based on the information above. The second and more interesting theory regarding the journalist’s death is that he was murdered by high-ranking government officials. According to Danny’s brother Anthony Casolaro, Danny stated “not to believe it if he died in what was reported to be an accident” (O’Harrow, 1). Casolaro’s briefcase was also missing that he took everywhere with him; multiple witnesses also note that they “saw a man with dark hair going into his room the night before he was found” (1). There were composite sketches from eyewitnesses that match the description of a high-ranking military intelligence officer as the man that was seen entering Casolaro’s hotel room that night. Contrary to the official ruling of suicide, many people argue that he was murdered due to his investigative research, and he was close to exposing the dark truth behind many government secrets (1).Danny was a positive, well-liked, family guy, who never gave any signs of trouble or forewarnings of him to commit suicide. Dr. Anthony Casolaro, Danny’s brother, stated that “he was always upbeat and positive” (O’Harrow and Lee, 1). Another friend of Danny’s, Ann Klenk, was reported as saying “Danny could make a Friday night seem like New Year’s Eve” (1). Close family and friends of Danny say he was always cheerful, and he was not depressive or the type of guy to kill himself based on the information above. Casolaro’s death has been a topic of discussion for quite some time with many people who were close to him and to the investigation arguing that he was murdered (O, Harrow, 1). Despite the official ruling, multiple mishandlings with the case lead many people to believe that he was murdered due to his investigative journalism into top government secrets (1). Anthony Weinfield argued many times that “Danny Casolaro, who was my best, beloved friend, who I grieve for very much, was not a person that would have committed suicide” (1). Other friends of Danny said, “It’s not like we are in mass denial; it’s the fact that we knew him for so long” (1). All these characteristics are exactly why there are so many disagreements with the official ruling of suicide. Danny was a positive, well-liked, family guy, who never gave any signs of trouble or anything leading him to commit suicide, in fact, it was quite the opposite. Despite the family’s doubts and calls for a more in-depth federal investigation, the case has been officially closed.

After examining the death of Danny Casolaro, two conspiracy theories are left to wonder:

  1. Did Danny Casolao commit suicide due to struggling financial issues?

  2. Was Danny murdered due to his investigative research into top government secrets?

Although those closest to Danny have raised their doubts and called for a more in-depth investigation into his death, most of the evidence was ignored and the case was eventually closed and ruled a suicide.
